ran/ dom : 1. n. haphazard, without aim or purpose or principle {Oxford Dictionary}
1: Recently, while fossicking in the archival boxes in our ‘ attic’ , I came across an old exercise book of mine from high school. Much to my amusement I saw that when I ought to have been listening to my teachers, I was in fact lost in a world of my own …..doodling!!
2: As a young boy I was fed a diet of wonderful tales, of gods, goddesses, heroes and villains, Medusa’s and Minotaurs, from my father who was a history professor; and subsequently have been fascinated with mythology ever since. And so it was, the other day while aimlessly surfing the net, I somewhat randomly came across ABRAXAS, which I found to be not only an old favourite Santana album of mine , but also an ‘ Egyptian god/demon which represented God and Satan as a single entity, within the dual nature of its’ essence.’ { Wikipedia definition }. Needless –to-say, this intrigued me, as it represents what the majority of religions extol in one way or another : i.e. the yin-yang duality of the universe and the good/ bad , or the positive/negative aspects in all things.
3: While many folk believe there is some reason for life, which is pre-ordained and mapped out , I am more of the opinion that life is a series of random events that influence us, modified only by the choices we make. I am { in fact } far from convinced that there is a reason for anything, let alone everything!
And so……. while I have a tendency to work thematically with my exhibitions, this time I thought it may be more interesting { for me anyway} to explore some different approaches to my work. Basically, I define myself as a mixed –media artist/ sculptor, but certainly not as a painter! ………… However, being a self-confessed ‘ dabbler’/ Jack-of-all-trades…master-of none! I am always keen to be on a learning curve, and add another skill to my artistic quiver. As such, I have attempted to incorporate some painting in this exhibition, loosely based/ or not, around the three influences mentioned above. I thought it may be of interest to see what doodling might produce, 45 years down the track, with a dreamlike image, and my interpretation of Abraxas meandering through the works in a somewhat random fashion…………. for no reason at all, other than……..‘ what is……. is! ’

p.s. In retrospect I guess I could have called the exhibition ABRAXAS Aaaaaaaaah well……c’est la vie!……..maybe next time
